·     AO1 – identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas

·     Must choose best quotation to answer question and must give one phrase/quotation only

·     Ensure focus is on the lines specified in the question

  • Block off the relevant lines.  Look only in these lines to answer.
  • Read the question very carefully
  • Only give the number of answers it asks you for in the question – should always be one

 

2. From lines x to y give two ways the writer shows…

(2 marks)

 

Spend four minutes answering this question

·     AO1 – identify and interpret explicit and implicit information and ideas

·     Must give two examples

·     Can be own words or quotations from the text

·     Ensure focus is on the lines specified in the question

  • Block off the relevant lines.  Look only in these lines to answer.    
  • Read the question very carefully
  • Only give the number of answers it asks you for in the question – should always be two

 

3. In lines x to y, how does the writer use language and structure to show… (theme/event/ idea/feeling)

(6 marks)

Spend fifteen minutes answering this question including five minutes planning time

  • AO2 – Comment on and analyse the effects and influence of the extract on the reader using subject terminology
  • Must include both structure and language analysis – cannot move past Level 1 without both
  • Must use subject terminology throughout
  • Must consider how it achieves certain effects.
  • Ensure focus is on the lines specified in the question
  • Block off the relevant lines.  Look only in these lines to answer.
  • Use P.E.E  to structure response
  • Use comments such as the ‘combined effect’, ‘coupled with’ to explore interrelationship of language and structure
  • Use analytical verbs

Language points:

  • Imagery
  • Word types
  • Lexical choice/fields
  • Sound devices etc.

Structure points:

  • Consider your structure questions
  • Contrasts
  • Lists
  • Pace – paragraph and sentence lengths
  • Anaphora
  • The way sentences begin if this is repeated or is significant in some way
  • The way the whole text begins and develops
  • Changes/shifts in tone
  • Repetition
  • Patterns
  • Motifs
  • Sentence types e.g. exclamations, rhetorical questions, short sentences, dashes for pauses etc.
  • Types of connectives
4. Evaluate how successfully a theme/ idea/ event/ effect/ feeling is presented in the text (15 marks)

Spend thirty five minutes answering this question including five minutes planning time

  • AO4 – evaluate texts critically, supported by textual references
  • Must answer the question asked – cannot move past Level 2 if question is not in sharp focus
  • Need to evaluate successfulness of extract in achieving the effect specified in the question
  • Support all points with short, embedded quotations from the extract
  • Respond to the text as a whole
  • Remember to reflect on the whole text.
  • Use SQUAD to structure response
  • Focus on characters, settings, plot and themes.
  • Use comments such as the ‘combined effect’, ‘coupled with’ to evaluate effectiveness of the text as a whole
  • Use evaluative language and analytical verbs
