Grammar Homework Sheet Year 8, Week 1

Grammar rules this week: The suffix –ing

When we are writing about something that is still happening in the present tense, we often use the suffix –ing.

e.g. I am watching TV.                         He is watching TV.                     They are watching TV.

An –ing word does not really have a tense by itself, however, so it needs the help of the verb to be.

I am watching TV.                                He is watching TV.                     They are watching TV.

We can, therefore, use an –ing verb in in any tense e.g.

Present

I am watching TV.                                He is watching TV.                     They are watching TV.

Past

I was watching TV                                 He was watching TV.                     They were watching TV.

Future

I will be watching TV                          He will be watching TV.                     They will be watching TV.
